MATH ENRICHMENT GROUPS MAKE LEARNING FUN!

MEGA (Math Enrichment Groups for Advancement) is a math enrichment program designed to get kids excited to learn math through fun, social, and challenging lessons.

HAVE FUN LEARNING MATH!

At MEGA, we play games, participate in contests, and apply real life scenarios to the subject matter so students can enrich their learning and make connections to the world around them. MEGA is premised on the notion that kids learn best socially and interactively and with plenty of positive encouragement. Everyone can be a math person!

Currently, MEGA classes are offered for 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th grades.

Classes are 90 minutes once a week and capped at 6 students per group (2nd - 4th grades) or 8 students per group (5th - 6th grades). The 5th and 6th grade math groups have a lead math coach as well as an assistant math coach.

WHAT'S THE ADVANTAGE OF LEARNING IN A GROUP?

  • Unlock student engagement kids learn new concepts through immersive activities.

  • Build cognitive stamina students gain confidence and continuously challenge themselves.

  • Strengthen interpersonal skills kids interact socially and collaboratively.

  • Develop self-reliance kids build skills that lead to independent learning!

  • Enjoy learning have fun with numbers in a positive educational environment!

LEARNING GROUP SESSIONS ARE TYPICALLY STRUCTURED AS FOLLOWS:

1. Classes start with the introduction of a new topic or the revisiting of a previous topic.

2. Students practice math concepts with worksheets and receive instructor and peer support.

3. Students play games to reinforce new concepts and strategies for solving math problems.

4. Students attempt the day's logic puzzle.

5. Students end the session by 'spending' their "chips" on fun prizes (chips are earned throughout the session for being helpful, having a positive attitude, and putting in effort).

NOT ALL KIDS LEARN THE SAME, BUT ALL KIDS CAN LEARN MATH

Some students love learning math; other kids get bored or become disengaged when the instruction is either too easy or too difficult. Some students may not wish to raise their hand in a normal classroom setting, but will contribute in a group discussion or activity where there is less pressure. MEGA is all about building children's self-efficacy and deep understanding of math concepts, and having them enjoy that process.

The MEGA curriculum is aligned to Common Core state standards. Typically, a session will move quickly through the curriculum. This is because the kids are incentivized and enjoying the learning process. MEGA will move the kids approximately six months ahead of the public school curriculum and aims to improve kids' confidence and learning outcomes in math.

We know teachers everywhere are working incredibly hard. We also know that so many teachers are overextended with work and some math lessons do not match every kid's learning style. Many class sizes exceed 30 children, making differentiated instruction a challenge. This context, along with the limited resources of schools, can influence teachers' capacity to provide more individualized instruction to children who either learn differently than others, who want to be more challenged, or who need extra practice or attention.
