The MEGA Math Philosophy

Philosophy

MEGA is more than a class; it's a concept. The MEGA model is based off of research and instructional models that demonstrate the effectiveness of small learning groups. In this context, children are given opportunities to interactively engage in math with peers, thereby boosting their interest in math while consistently reinforcing concepts. Kids are acquiring knowledge in ways that are both subtle and profound.

A key goal of MEGA is to instill in kids an enjoyment of learning math. Kids are told, "let's have fun!" They are asked to help each other, be proud of their work, and rely on themselves. Self-efficacy and self-reliance are much-emphasized components of this program. Learning to trust your instincts, set high standards for yourself, and be responsible are also consistently reinforced. Students are asked to be compassionate with themselves and not give up when a math problem is challenging at first.

Kids are regularly told to be responsible for remembering their supplies (and not to expect their parents to remind them). They are asked them to keep their binders organized and to write as clearly as they can. At this age, kids are just getting into a 'self-reliant mindset.'

Students are intentionally provided with all the exact same supplies. It takes the work and thinking out of it for parents and starts everyone on the same page. It also is intended to help them learn how to be organized. They're told "you have a pencil pouch, so no excuses for not having a pencil." Each kid also has a binder to keep their worksheets and two dry erase boards, along with dry erase markers.
